Greek Gods.
The aim for this project was to redesign the boxes of the Winsor and Newton ‘William’ Ink Collection. I used them a lot at the time of making this and was interested in exploring my own application of colour more. This was born out of research into the origins and stories behind colour - and what do they all have in common? A couple of Gods and, a couple of Myths of course. Here lies a Godly story for each colour.
-
Helios. Sunshine Yellow.
Helios who pulls the sun across the sky in his golden chariot, East to West every day. One myth tells that Helios is the one who informed Hephaestus of Aphrodite’s affair with Ares.
-
Aphrodite. Vermillion.
Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, known for her fierce passion. In love with Ares but doomed to never marry him.
-
Ares. Deep Red.
Ares the God of war, the source of conflict and contention within the Gods. His father Zeus being the ruler and one of his most frequent combatants.
-
Zeus. Purple.
Zeus, the god of lightning and thunder, the ruler of all and father of many. One of the most well known figures in Greek Mythology.
-
Poseidon. Ultramarine.
Poseidon, the God of the sea, storms, earthquakes and horses. Brother of Zeus, equally known for his power. His most well known emblem being the trident.
-
Demeter. Brilliant Green.
Demeter, the Goddess of the harvest and the fertility of the Earth, extremely important to the Greek people. She had a beautiful daughter by the name of Persephone.
-
Persephone. Peat Brown.
Persephone became the queen of the underworld after being abducted by Hades, she found herself residing there for six months of the year - the six months the flowers don’t bloom. She eventually did come to love Hades.
-
Hades. Black.
Hades, God of death and the king of the underworld, he watches over souls as they pass to the other side. The entrance to the underworld is guarded by a three-headed-dog, known as Cerberus, who is only appeased by honey cake.
These mock-ups were an important part of this project but to get there I spent a long time experimenting with imagery in order to figure out the stories I wanted to tell and how. The land of experimentation is a vast one.
These ideas got developed into what they would eventually become. It was a project which flexed my digital and professional mock-up skills as well as my problem solving and ability to create a body of work.
